As the result of a referral by NSS Executive Director George Whitesides, NSS-NT was contact by the local representative of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program to get the names of speakers about space in the D/FW area. Chapter president Ken Murphy was invited to speak on a panel with astronomer Dan Garland from the University of North Texas about new frontiers in space. Mr. Garland spoke about the impact possibilities of asteroid 2004MN impacting in 2036, as well as the Deep Impact mission scheduled for a stellar display on July 4th. Mr. Murphy spoke about the need to get more people into space to do useful things like fix broken GEO sats or mine oxygen on the Moon.
There were a lot of great questions from the audience of some 100 high school sophomores. The panel was well received, and NSS-NT has been asked to participate in next year's HOBY Leadership program in North Texas.
